Wireless Communication Policy: SCB–WCP–01

Find information concerning wireless networks owned, controlled or maintained by 3rd parties for the Smeal College of Business.

1.0 Purpose

This policy establishes procedures for gaining secure access to wireless data communications within the Smeal College of Business.

2.0 Scope

This policy covers all wireless data communication devices (e.g., personal computers, PDAs, Cell phones, etc.) connected directly to any wireless network supplied within the Smeal College of Business. This includes any form of wireless communication device capable of transmitting packet data.

3.1  Policy

To comply with this policy, wireless users must:

  • use the Penn State supplied VPN Client or a compatible client that can be configured with Penn State’s Wireless Network

In order to comply with this policy any Wireless Access Point established by the Smeal College of Business RIIT Group and connected to the Penn State network will only allow network access via an approved VPN solution to ensure privacy, authenticity, and integrity of the wireless communications.

4.0 Enforcement

The Smeal College of Business Research Instructional and Information Technology Group (RIIT Group) has been authorized by the Dean of the Smeal College of Business to enforce this policy.

Furthermore, any employee found to have violated this policy may be subject to disciplinary action by their Administrative unit, the College, or the University.

5.0 Definitions

User Authentication

A method by which the user of a wireless system can be verified as a legitimate user independent of the computer or operating system being used.
