How to Choose a Name for a File

Learn how to choose a title and file name for a file.

Adding a Title

Adding a title is required for accessibility issues.

When choosing a Title for a file, such as a PDF, Word document, or Powerpoint presentation, consider using the document's original title. If the title is too long, create a shorter title based on the actual given title. At the very end of the last word, add a space and the capitalized extension, PDF, DOCX, or PPT, respectively. For example: Faculty and Staff Orientation PDF.

Adding a File Name

When adding a file, before uploading it, be sure that it is named properly. All file names should be lower-case, use dashes for spaces, have no punctuation, and end with the file extension. For example: faculty-and-staff-orientation.pdf.
